In an impressive display of talent and determination, 16-year-old Tharusha Perera, a Sri Lanka born Australian open water swimmer, clinched the third place at the 2023 Queensland Open Water Championships. The event, held on the 14th of October, saw Tharusha competing in the challenging 16-year 7.5km category.

Open water swimming is quite different from pool-based races, as it takes place in natural water like oceans, rivers, and lakes. These settings bring their own set of challenges, including cold water and unpredictable currents. Tharusha, proudly representing Sri Lanka under the Sri Lankan Federation, received coaching from Kelly Stubbins at Cheltenham ASC.

In a grueling competition, Tharusha emerged as the third fastest swimmer in his age group, completing the 7.5km course in an impressive time of one hour, 40 minutes, and 20.75 seconds. This accomplishment highlights his dedication and skill in open water swimming.

Earlier this year, Tharusha also participated in the Australian Open Water Championship in January. In the 16 Years 5km category, he secured the 17th place with a time of one hour, seven minutes, and 22.87 seconds. Tharusha’s remarkable performance has earned him a spot in next year’s competition in both the 5km and 7.5km events, showing his commitment to improving and achieving success in open water swimming.

Tharusha has also earned medals in the Sri Lanka Age Group Nationals for the 800m and 1500m events, showcasing his versatility and talent across different swimming disciplines.

As he looks to the future, Tharusha Perera aspires to represent Sri Lanka in international open water competitions, demonstrating his ambition and potential in this challenging discipline.
