The issue is not these projects but how can they be managed efficiently and profitably – MP Chamal Rajapaksa
The issue is not about building an international port, airport and cricket stadium in Hambantota district but how can they be managed efficiently and profitably, SLPP MP Chamal Rajapaksa said in Parliament yesterday.
If investors can be brought into these projects and then develop them as business ventures, it would not be a big issue to bring in foreign exchange to the country, he said.
I would also like to ask whether these assets do not belong to the people of Hambantota. Those who supported Mahinda Rajapaksa when he was building ports, airports and stadiums are now raising these issues. The then Cabinet decided to build such projects all over the country,” he also said.
He was responding to the oral question raised by MP Lalith Ellawala regarding the construction of the Sooriyawewa cricket stadium in Hambantota. He said that it was earlier proposed to build an international airport in several places like Higurakgoda, Angunakolapalassa, Puttalam, Mathugama, and it was finally built in Hambantota.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe even laid the foundation stone to build an airport in Kuda Oya. The problem is not construction. But these places should be properly managed and developed as profitable institutions. After 2016, these places were destroyed under the Yahapalana government. No one talks about it. He said it is reported a ship carrying 3,000 to 4,000 tourists arrives at Hambantota port every week.
