Filling a much needed vacuum for a luxury boutique hotel in the region, Thema Collection, unveiled its newest addition ‘Waraka Udawalawe’ an eco-luxury retreat on June 1.
A family-owned company comprising boutique hotels, resorts and retreats across Sri Lanka had invested over Rs. 350 million to open this 12 rooms luxury property with two suites which is the 13th hotel in their chain said Managing Director, Chandra Wickramasinghe.
“Located just 20 minutes away from Udawalawe National Park we named the property, Waraka due to its one-acre of land having 21 jack trees. However, we did not remove a single tree to build the property which was entirely architecture by our own design team, mainly using unique eco-friendly material.”
Waraka retreat boasts a range of modern amenities, including a restaurant offering delectable international and local cuisine, an Ayurveda spa, canoeing in the river bordering the hotel, cycling and many other activities amidst breathtaking scenery.
“With a commitment to sustainable development, Waraka focuses on empowering local communities, conserving biodiversity, promoting energy conservation through renewable sources, and engaging in community development initiatives,” said Theme Resorts & Spas Director of Marketing and Business Development, Maxime Wickramasinghe.
“We are catering to a mixed high end clientele and are adding several other activities in a bid to extend guests’ hotel stay to a minimum two to three days. We extend our support to ‘Eth Athuru Sevana,’ Asia’s first Elephant Transit Home established in 1995 on rescuing and nurturing elephants orphaned mainly due to human-elephant conflicts and releasing them back into their natural habitat.”
As a part of this Sustainability Initiative, Thema Collection adopted a baby elephant, ‘Amine’ pledging support for its rehabilitation journey.”
Among the Thema Collection’s esteemed properties are Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa in Pasikuda, Aliya Resort & Spa in Sigiriya, Kithala Resort in Tissa, Ayurvie Weligama, Ayurvie Sigiriya and many bungalows converted into luxury properties. Additionally, Thema Collection has exciting expansion plans with upcoming properties like Ambayalu Kandalama, set to open next winter. Other properties such as Atikaya Ella and Maalu Maalu Kalpitiya are currently in the planning stages.
