A group of thieves broke into the house of a businessman in Thambagalle, Madampe with sharp weapons, locked the residents in a room and stole around Rs.20 million and a stock of gold jewellery on Wednesday (18).
This group of four thieves armed with swords and sharp weapons reached this house on Wednesday (18) in a van. Police said that the robbers stole nearly 35 pounds of gold from two rooms of the respective house.
Police investigations have revealed that the owners of the house where the incident occurred are coconut businessmen and at the same time they are engaged in some other business.
Police said that the robbers came in a van without anyone suspecting it and after that they broke into the house with swords and sharp weapons. They locked the residents in such a way that they could not go anywhere in the house and after that they searched for the money.
Rs. 2.7 million was found hidden in one room and another Rs.5.5 million was also found in another room. After that, the robbers looted nearly 35 pounds of gold belonging to the owners of the house from another part of the house. After that, they put all the residents in one room and locked the doors and ran away with the car keys and mobile phones. Police said that the residents who were locked in the room broke the doors and came out. Chilaw Divisional Police On-Site Investigation (SOCO) and police fingerprinting officers also came and were engaged in related duties.
Madampe Police Station Chief Inspector Saman Ekanayake, Crime Division OIC Madhuranga and team are conducting investigations.
