Thineera Akalanka a fine all rounder
He is a batsmen who towered over the rest at school level in Kandy and this season in the limited games played he made an unbeaten 62 against Al-Azahr College and took 5 for 14 against Vidyartha College. His all-round game is built around quick hand-eye coordination, deft wrist work and front-foot pull shots.
He led the side this year, and is a fourth year coloursman, who bats right hand and bowls off spin. This year he was the man of the match in the 22nd Battle of the Gold’s two day match the one and only big match played this year over here in Kandy in the month of April on 24th and 25th at Katugastota. In this game Wariyapola Sri Sumangala made 208 runs with Thineera Akalanka scoring 26 in the first innings and in the second innings they were 111 for 9 in which he made 28, Sri Rahula College in their turn were all put for 114 and he took 3 for 20.
This school was formerly known as St. Paul’s College and has a long history and one of the first schools in Kandy to play the game of cricket that was in 1894, after few years they gave up the game and after 87 years in 1981 restarted the game with famous late D.H. de Silva as the coach
