Thiyagaraja Kalaikumari outstanding sportswoman
She was born on October 18, 2000 Her parents are Ammasi Thiyagaraja and Karuppiah Vijayalakshmi of Halgaranoya, Ragala, Stafford Tea Estate. Kalaikumari has two elder sisters Kalaichelvi and Tamilselvi and a younger brother Rushanthan.
Kalaikumari joined Ragala Tamil Higher National School on January 7,2006 for academic activities and excelled in studies from grade one to five. From an early age, (after grade five) she showed more interest in running, long jump and high jump events and participated in school level, divisional, zonal, district, provincial and national level competitions and achieved success. Apart from this she has participated in team sports like netball, volleyball, football, Elle and cricket and has made the school famous at the provincial level for her talent and has been selected as the best player many times.
She also had the opportunity to showcase her talents at the divisional, zonal, district and provincial level in the long jump and high jump in 2018 and finally she took part the All Island Schools Athlete Competition in 2018 which was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo.
In 2019, She passed the Advanced Level Examination in the Bio System Technology category and placed first at the school level and 17th at the district level, qualifying to pursue higher studies at the University of Jaffna.
My family background, lack of proper training and the limited sports resources found in my school were detrimental to the progress of my sports career but the encouragement and guidance of the school principal Mical Panneer Selvam, Vice Principal Anthonymuthu Anburose and teacher in charge of sports and physical education Anbalagan Thilipan Raj was instrumental in the success of my sports career.
She also said that if better training facilities and assistance are available her ambition is to showcase her talents and bring pride to the school and her motherland at the international level.
