Three arrested for abusing girl inside bus

A man who sexually abused a 15-year-old female student inside a passenger bus and the driver and the conducted who aided and abetted him in the crime in the Kurunegala area have been arrested by the police.

The student had been abused while she was returning home from school in a private passenger bus running from Kurunegala to Nikagolla.

The suspects have been remanded until 23rd of this month by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects are a 23-year-old man from Kumbukweva Nikagolla,working as a warehouse manager in an institution in Yakkala area, the bus driver, a 34-year-old resident of Welgala area, and a 23-year-old resident of Periyakadunalawa area, who is the conductor. Police said the student had boarded this bus on the 11th after school as usual near the school.

Later when the bus came close to the Wadugama area, where the students home was located, Police said that only the student, the conductor and the suspect who abused her were on the bus.

Police say that when the student was about to get off the bus near Wadugama area, the suspect pulled her to the back seat of the bus and the conductor closed the doors of the bus and closed the curtains on the windows.

Police said that the driver had increased the volume of the cassette in the bus.

Police said that the bus had reached its destination and was on the way back, and in the meantime, the student was molested by the main suspect and even parts of her school uniform including her tie had been removed.

Accordingly, it has been confirmed that the driver and conductor had been given space for this activity in the bus according to a plan in advance, DIG S. Y. Seneviratne said.

This student was dropped from the place where she was supposed to get off the bus after this incident. She had not told her parents about this and on the 12th when she went to school she had told the teacher about this. The DIG also said that the teacher had informed the police about this.

Accordingly, the Kumbukgate Police conducted investigations and arrested the suspects related to this crime on the 13th.

The DIG further stated that the bus used in the crime has also been taken into police custody and a request is being made to the authorities to cancel its route permit.
