The Mirigama Police have arrested three persons, including a Buddhist monk, on suspicion of assaulting and destroying the official vehicle of the Dambulla Mayor.
According to the police, on the afternoon of May 9, the Mayor and his team and the vehicle were attacked by a mob near the Mirigama entrance of the Central Expressway.
At that time, the Mirigama Police intervened and took action to save the lives of the Mayor and his group, and they were hospitalized. The mob then destroyed the official vehicle and set it on fire.
Following the attack, 17 arrack bottles and a four-foot-long knife were found in the vehicle at the time of the incident.
According to the police, the monk who was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident had gone to the house of MP Kokila Harshani Gunawardena in Loluwagoda on the same day and set the house on fire.
The suspect had stood on the vehicle which had been smashed and overturned at the time of the incident and had provoked the public.
The arrested suspects will be produced before court under the Public Property Act. A police team has been deployed to arrest another person involved in the incident, police said.
