0 3

The historical huge Na tree, which is about 25 feet in circumference and is considered to be more than 300 years old in the Medagoda Pattini Devala premises, has been gradually leaning towards the ground and is in danger of falling to the ground.

Also, the roots of the tree on the surface of the earth have rotted and the attention of the authorities should be directed to protect the historic tree soon.

Avissawella Medagoda Purana Pattini Devalaya belonging to the historic Sitawaka kingdom is an ancient place of worship with a history of more than 500 years. According to the history, the foundation date of that temple is July 6, 1482 AD. It is also known that this temple was built by King Sitawaka Rajasingha who reigned in Sitawaka kingdom. It is stated that King Sitawaka Rajasingha has allotted 631 acres, 1 rood and 18 perches of land for this Devala site with a Sannasa.

At the same time, the Medagoda Pattini Devalaya has been constructed for God Pattini and people have been settled in Medagoda village to fulfill 18 duties.

This land belonging to the Department of Archeology has been gazetted as a sacred site and is managed by a board of trustees including the current Basnayaka Nilame Ajith Bandara.

The Basnayake Nilame noted that although the responsible institutions and individuals including archaeological authorities have been informed about this, no one’s attention has been focused on it so far.

The Basnayake Nilame as well as the residents of the area are urging to take prompt action since this historic huge Na tree is leaning towards the ground day by day due to bad weather and if the tree is uprooted the next generation will not be able to see it.
