Three including monk arrested for gem mining in Suriyawewa

Three persons, including a Buddhist monk, who were mining for gems in Suriyawewa Viharagala Purana Rajamaha Vihara land, have been arrested in a raid conducted by the Police Special Task Force.

The raid was carried out on Tuesday (20) according to information received by the officers of the Suriyawewa Camp of the Police Special Task Force.

The Special Task Force mentions that the arrested monk resides in Viharagala Purana Raja Maha Temple. The other two are residents of Suriyawewa area.

At the time of the raid, this group was digging for gems. The police special task force officers have taken the equipment used for excavation into custody.

After presenting the arrested suspects including the Buddhist monk to the Assistant Director Gems and Jewellery Authority of Matara Sumith Chandrasekara for further investigations, a spot fine of Rs. 45,000 was imposed, the Special Task Force said.

According to the orders and instructions of the Commander of the Special Task Force, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Waruna Jayasundara, under the guidance of Hambantota Zone Commander, Senior Superintendent of Police, Vidura Natha Dissanayake and under the supervision of Assistant Superintendent of Police, Sampath Kumara, Deputy Station Commander of Suriyawewa STF Camp, Inspector W.M.G.R. Weerasinghe and a police team conducted the raid.
