A team of Police officers at Mulliyaveli Police station arrested five people, including three Indians, who were treasure hunting in the Mulliyaveli Navakkadu forest area.
According to the information received from an Air Force Intelligence officer that a group of people were digging in the Navakkadu forest area of Mulliyaveli and searching for antiquities, the Police arrested this group during a raid on Wednesday (20).
The Police say these suspects are aged 40, 39 and 30. Under the instructions of Mulliyaveli Police OIC Inspector K. H. K. Sangeeth, a team of officers including Sub Inspector Wijebandara conducted the raid. The suspects were performing sacrifices and digging by the time Police conducted the raid. Three of the arrested persons were identified as residents of the Indian State of Kerala. Police say that the other two are residents of Navakkadu in Mulliyaveli. Investigations have also revealed that the three Indian nationals are relatives of the suspect who resides in Muliyaveli. One of them is identified as a blacksmith by profession.
A senior Police officer said that the three had come to Sri Lanka by air as tourists. Police have taken their passports into custody.
