Three Policemen arrested for robbing youth in Eravur
The officers of the Batticaloa Divisional Police Investigation Department yesterday (11) arrested three police officers of the Eravur Police who abducted a young man who was walking on the road. Police took him in handcuffs, assaulted him and robbed him of Rs.6,500.
A Police Sergeant and two Constables have been arrested for this. These three officers were deployed for mobile patrol in a police three wheeler in Eravur town on August 9. During the night patrol, the Police officers stopped a young man who was walking near Eravur Municipal Council and checked his identity. At that time, the young man did not have a national identity card but he explained that he was a 23 and a resident of Eravur Michinagar. The officers handcuffed the young man, put him in the three-wheeler, beat him, took him to a deserted place and threatened him to pay them Rs.15,000 or 20,000 to release him. The officers further told him that if he did not pay, they would put introduce drugs and send him to jail.
At that time, this young man had only Rs.6,500 in his hand. Police officers robbed that money and later released the young man.
He had told his father about this. To inquire about it, the father took this young man to the Eravur police station yesterday (10) morning. During the questioning of the relevant officers, Rs.1,500 was given back to the young man.
The father took the son to the Batticaloa SP’s office and and the three Police officers were arrested after the investigation.
