Three scanning for buried gold arrested in Valachchenai

Police Special Task Force officers of the Valachchenai camp on Saturday arrested three persons including an owner of a car sale, who were scanning a cemetery in Karuwankerni in Valachchenai in search of gold that was said to have   been buried by the LTTE during the war. The owner of the car sales centre is a resident of Wadduwa. The rest of the suspects are residents of Kalutara and Embogama in Kurunegala. Investigations have revealed that it was the resident of Kalutara who brought the underground metal detector to find the gold that have allegedly been buried in the cemetery.

It has been revealed by questioning the suspects that the person who called this group to this place was a retired Navy officer. The Special Task Force stated that investigations are underway to identify the person. These suspects have come to Valachchenai in a car. The STF personnel stated that the villagers had informed about them while the suspects were searching for gold with the help of metal detector.They had arrived at Valachchenai on Saturday and stayed at a hotel.

The suspects were remanded for 14 days after being produced before the Valachchenai magistrate’s court yesterday.
