Three separate captains for National Test, ODI and T20 teams

The new look National cricket selection committee is expected to appoint new captains for all three formats separately.

The Chairman of the National selection committee Upul Tharanga said, we are still observing what type of changes are necessary and we want to do it all in the correct manner. We want to work as a team and my members Tharanga Paranawithana, Ajantha Mendis, Indika de Saram and Dilruwan Perera already discussed several issues and we want to go forward with a proper plan

First duty is to select the team for forthcoming Zimbabwe series which will commence on January 6 and we have both T-20 and ODI series. National Selection Committee closely works with the Provincial Selection Committee comprising Nalliah Devarajan, Ajith Ekanayake, Duminda Wickramasinghe, Suwanji Madanayake and Chandana Guruge and they already have done tremendous duty to overlook domestic tournaments such as Major Club limited over and league and National Super League (NSL) Cricket tournaments.

SLC already plan to conduct NSL tournament next month while Provincial selectors already selected players for NSL teams based on the performances of Major Clubs league tournaments. National Selection Committee and Provincial Selection Committee already discussed regard to NSL tournaments and Cricket overall consultant Sanath Jayasuriya, Coaches Consaltant Mahela Jayawardne were present at the discussion.

Meanwhile selectors also plan to conduct T-20 match series among four teams to select T-20 team for the Zimbabwe series and Provincial selectors already picked the four teams captained by Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka and after this series the selectors will pick T-20 team. More than 20 member squad they will select first and get approval from the Ministry. In addition captains and deputy skippers of the teams of Test, T-20 and ODI will be selected first and get approval from the Sports Ministry as soon as possible and after approval they have plans to release it to the media.

Meanwhile ongoing Major clubs limited over cricket tournament matches are closely followed by National and Provincial selectors. Sri Lanka have very busy schedule next year 2024 after Zimbabwe and Afghanistan home series Sri Lanka will tour Bangladesh and then T-20 World Cup in USA and West Indies and National selectors have big challenge to pick teams next year.

Meanwhile the new selection committee also concerned about players’ fitness and yesterday also there was a fitness test for the National players at Sugathadasa Outdoor Stadium.
