Three suspects arrested along with stock of beedy leaves

Hiran Priyankara Jayasinghe, Puttalam Additional Corr, Marawila Mihira Wijesekera and Kalpitiya Group Corr. Puttalam Police Special Task Force officers arrested three suspects along with a stock of Beedi leaves worth nearly Rs. 7,000.000 in Palaviya, Puttalam on the information provided by the Army Intelligence Officers.

The suspects were handed over to Puttalam Police Headquarters for further investigations.

Police said the suspects are residents of Wennappuwa and Kalpitiya.

Officials of the Puttalam Police Special Task Force Camp who conducted the raid said that the beedi leaves were packed in 36 bags and 1091 kg of beedi leaves in them.

The stock had been illegally brought from India to Kalpitiya via sea and was then being taken in a lorry. The beedi leaves were secretly being taken from Kalpitiya to a beedi producing unit for processing when they were seized, Police said.

The lorry along with the beedi leaves stock and the suspects were to be produced before the Puttalam Court.
