The Kandy Headquarters Police are conducting investigations to arrest three persons who came to a gem and jewellery shop on Peradeniya Road, Kandy, and stole a blue sapphire which was priced at Rs.8 million, after replacing it with a glass stone with a similar appearance.
The persons who had come to buy the blue sapphire had left the shop while promising to come later to buy it. The owner of the shop who felt suspicious about the behaviour of the customers had later inspected the sapphire and found out that it was a fake. He had immediately complained to the Kandy police.
Police investigations have revealed that the suspects had known in advance about the blue sapphire that was for sale in the shop and brought a fake gemstone made of glass to look similar to it and very meticulously changed it to the real blue sapphire.
Police have uncovered information about the suspects and the vehicle they came in through CCTV footage and investigations are underway to arrest the suspects.
