Ragama Police arrested three women over an incident of selling two infants who are only seven days old. They were remanded after being produced before Welisara Acting Magistrate Dinushi Perera. The mother of these twins are also among the arrested.
They were arrested on Wednesday on a tip off received to the Ragama Police Station from two locations. The mother residing in Piliyandala had sold an infant to a woman at Rs.25,000 and the other infant was given to another woman after providing food and travelling expenses to the mother.
These two women are residents of Ragama and Polonnaruwa and the mother and two infants are held at Castle Street Hospital for Women. The Acting Magistrate yesterday inspected the infants and the mother at the hospital. Police said that she had two children from the her first marriage and these twins were born when she was living with her partner.
