Three women stealing sarees in Gampaha arrested

Gampaha Police said that three women alleged to have stolen valuable sarees from a textile shop in the Gampaha town together with a three-wheeler driver who assisted them were taken into custody day before on Thursday (12).

Three female suspects all residents of Piliyandala and the three-wheeler driver, had stolen sarees from textile shops in Negombo, Kadawatha, Kalutara, Panadura and Avissawella towns as well.

According to the police among the three suspects are a mother and daughter and a relative of theirs and they have together with the three-wheeler driver have engaged in stealing sarees in an

organized manner.

These three women are said to visit shops and while two of them select sarees the other woman hides sarees inside her clothing and steals sarees of higher value. This was revealed during

questioning of the suspects. The police have found 38 sarees which they had stolen thus, from various shops.

Officers of the criminal investigation division had inspected footage from security cameras of a shop, as the owner had lodged a complaint with the Gampaha police that it appears that several sarees were missing. They had then discovered the suspicious behaviour of three women and how they went outside on several occasions to a three-wheeler.

Accordingly, investigations had been carried out based on the number of three-wheeler and three women between the ages of 40 and 50 years together with the three-wheeler driver who had assisted them to take away the stolen sarees was taken into custody.Police said that when the suspects were questioned it was revealed that the stolen stock of sarees had been sold to a woman in a distant area.

The four suspects were produced at the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court yesterday (13).
