Namal Rajapaksa granted bail over money laundering allegations in Airbus case

Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa, who was remanded over money laundering allegations linked to the Airbus case, has been released on bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amaraseena ordered Rajapaksa to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and two surety bails of Rs. 30 million each. The court also imposed a travel ban on Rajapaksa and ordered that the restriction be notified to the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration. As a further bail condition, the magistrate ordered Rajapaksa not to interfere with witnesses.

President directs New Drug Control Law to be passed by October

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed officials to take steps to have the new drug control legislation already presented to Parliament passed by the third week of October, as part of the government’s efforts to combat the drug menace in Sri Lanka. The President instructed that the proposed legislation be referred to the relevant parliamentary committee during the first week of October to obtain approval, with measures thereafter to have it passed by Parliament by the third week of the month. The instructions were issued during a meeting of the “A Nation United” National Operations Council, established to eradicate the dangerous drug menace from the country, held at the Presidential Secretariat today (30)

Ranil’s misuse of state funds case adjourned till November

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court today ordered that the case filed by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe and former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake be taken up again on November 11 to obtain the Attorney General’s advice.

The case was heard before Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena, with both Wickremesinghe and Ekanayake appearing in court. The court issued the order after considering the progress of the investigations and the need to obtain the Attorney General’s advice.

Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath held discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81). Income Tax payment deadline today

The Inland Revenue Department has reminded taxpayers that today (30) is the deadline for making the final income tax payment for the 2025/2026 year of assessment. The department said all taxpayers paying income tax on behalf of companies, individuals and partnerships must use payment period code 25260 when making the payment.Taxpayers can make payments online or at any branch of the Bank of Ceylon.The Inland Revenue Department warned that interest and penalties will be imposed on payments made after the deadline and urged taxpayers to settle their dues by today.
