Tourism inflows to touch USD 1 Bn by March – 2024

Sri Lanka’s Tourism revenue will touch the USD one billion mark at the end of March 2024. For the first two months’ tourism receipts were estimated to be over USD 710 million.

“We experience around USD 300 million each month so far, and will touch the USD one-billion-mark at the end of the month,” an official from Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority said.

For the second month in succession, Sri Lanka Tourism passed the 200,000 arrival landmark in February 2024 reordering 218,350 tourists. This is a record 102.8% increase against 2023 February which was 107,639. In January 2024 Sri Lanka saw 208,253 visitors which was also over 100% increase against the 2023 January which was 102,545.

Minister of Tourism, Lands and Sports Harin Fernando in an ‘X’ said “Sri Lanka Amazing two months in the year 2024, the second consecutive month with over two hundred thousand arrivals, highest ever arrivals after taking over in 29 days.”

The Russian Federation was the top source destination for Sri Lanka with 32,030 guests and accounting for 15% of the total market while India was second with 30,027 arrivals. United Kingdom was third (20,614). Germany (16,259) was fourth and China (14,836) remained the fifth best source destination for Sri Lanka.

Chairman Sri Lana Tourism, Chalaka Gajabahu said that the arrivals may drop slightly in May and June and would pick up thereafter. “We had nearly 1.5 million arrivals for 2023 and hope to pass 2.3 million this year.”

He said that the current spend of a tourist which is around USD 160 will also double in about two years and will reach around USD 500 by the end of 2029. The ongoing tourism boom has also resulted in new airlines touching in Sri Lanka and Maldivian announced plans to operate two flights per week from April. In addition, Etihad Airlines which operates 10 flights per week will increase it to 20 by the end of May. Thai Airways also announced their reentry to Colombo.
