National Peoples’ Power (NPP) Kalutara District Team Leader for the forthcoming General Election, Nalinda Jayatissa said that in 2025 the tourism sector is expected to generate an income of US$ 8.5 billion.

Jayatissa stated that the NPP will implement a formal programme to increase tourism income by increasing tourist arrivals to four million annually by 2025. He made these remarks while speaking to the Daily News yesterday in Colombo.

Jayatissa added that the Government is working to get more income through the development of the tourism sector and is taking necessary steps to improve the resources, including the necessary infrastructure, for this sector.

Since the current facilities the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) are not sufficient to cater to the increasing number of tourists, steps have already been taken to start the construction of its second terminal under the assistance of the Japanese government.

Jayatissa further said that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has already earned a name as the ‘anti-corruption president’ around the world and through that there is a great potential to attract foreign direct investment.

He emphasized that along with the development of the national economy, rural economic development and increase of welfare facilities for the common people, development of infrastructure and empowerment of livelihood are considered as the prime tasks of the Government. He further noted that unlike the previous governments, the present Government will give priority to mega projects and infrastructure development.

Jayatissa said that in order to increase the productivity and efficiency of the public service and to enable the public to get services in a more friendly and easy way, the public services will be completely digitized. Aiming to create a production-based economy, new investments will be made by inviting as many world-recognized foreign direct investments as possible whilst implementing an anti-corruption programme.

He also mentioned that the NPP is quite sure that his group which is contesting the upcoming General Election from the Kalutara district under the NPP banner, will get eight out of 11 seats.
