The Jaffna Magistrate ordered a foreign travel ban on the nurse in charge of the ward who has been accused in an incident in connection with having had to amputate the arm of an eight-year-old admitted to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital with fever.

The magistrate issued this order on Thursday (7), subsequent to considering a case which had been filed at the Jaffna Courts against this nurse by the girl’s father.

During preliminary investigations it had been revealed that the child’s arm had to be amputated due to the nurse’s carelessness in giving a wrong injection.

The Northern Province Health Services Director had appointed an investigation board comprising of two doctors to look into the facts concerning this incident and they have handed over their report. However, since the Health Services Director had not revealed information regarding those found guilty, several protests had been organized in front of the Jaffna Hospital.

Residents of Jaffna have begun obtaining signatures for a petition requesting justice for the child from the President.

A group from Jaffna had gone to the Jaffna Court with the girl’s father where some relatives had filed a case. As a result, foreign travel has been banned for the nurse in question and the Jaffna Court has taken steps to take up the case for hearing on September 18.
