Veterinary treatment is continuing for a wild elephant that fell ill and collapsed in the Sammanthurai area of the Ampara District, with wildlife officials working around the clock to save the animal.

According to the Ministry of Environment, the male elephant, estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old, is receiving intensive veterinary care under a joint operation involving wildlife officials, veterinary teams, the Sri Lanka Army and Police.

The Ministry stated that although the elephant appears to be well-built and generally in good physical condition, its abdomen is unusually swollen, despite having no visible external injuries.

Veterinary officials initially suspect that the animal’s condition may have been caused by poisoning or a gastrointestinal blockage resulting from the consumption of indigestible materials such as polythene.

The Eastern Regional Wildlife Veterinary Unit, Ampara Wildlife Range Office and Sammanthurai Beat Office are jointly coordinating the treatment efforts.

The Ministry said essential antibiotics were administered to the elephant yesterday (22), while wildlife officials continue to monitor its condition.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in the area has caused flooding at the location where the elephant collapsed, creating difficulties for the ongoing treatment.

Authorities are currently preparing the ground using sand to ensure that treatment can continue without interruption.

The Sri Lanka Army has deployed 10 personnel to assist the Department of Wildlife Conservation, while Police have also extended support to the operation.

According to the Ministry, a team of wildlife officers remains at the location day and night to monitor the elephant, ensure its safety and administer medication at the required times. (Newswire)
