Former champions Trinity College have cleared their biggest hurdle in their attempt to regain the Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament. Last week they dished out some fast open rugby to edge out traditional rivals and the defending champions Royal College 21-20 in an absolute thriller at the Royal Sports Complex in Reid Avenue.
The significant feature about their performance was that they believed in themselves and went about their task while playing their own style of rugby despite performing away from home.
Trinity’s confidence was always at a high level throughout the game, and they simply proved it by deciding to run the ball into spaces while under pressure even from their own territory.
The other important fact was that they never gave up hopes of pulling off the game and were able to turn the match in their favour in a dramatic fashion at the last moment from the jaws of defeat.
The Trinitians have also raised their chances of topping Group-1 of the tournament with two more games left behind them against St. Joseph’s College and Kingswood College, both on their home grounds at Pallekele.
On the other hand, Royal will be regretting the number of missed opportunities they had as just one penalty would have made the difference and helped them to remain unbeaten this season.
Meanwhile, Thurstan College recorded back-to-back victories to claim major honours in the Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘B’ Division League Rugby Tournament. The Thurstanites started their campaign with a comprehensive 29-10 triumph against Ananda College and followed up with a thrilling 37-36 victory over Sri Sumangala College, Kandy at the Pallekele Stadium.
Maliyadeva College were also able to register two wins from their two outings as they made a strong start to the season in an attempt to finish on top of their group.
The lads from Kurunegala defeated St. Aloysius’ College, Galle 14-10 but were stretched to the maximum in the next game as they snatched an exciting 15-14 victory against Lumbini MV on their home grounds.
