A tipper truck transporting stone chips collided with the Moratuwa – bound semi express train at a level crossing near the Mirigama Railway Station around 5.35 a.m. yesterday.
Both the tipper truck and the locomotive of the power-set train incurred severe damages in the accident.
The driver of the tipper was admitted to the Wathupitiwala Base Hospital with injuries while no injuries are reported to the engine driver and the assistant as they had vacated the cabin just before the accident. The accident happened when the tipper truck entered the rail track ignoring the red signal and the alarm at this protected level crossing.
Following the accident, all trains to and from Colombo Fort along the main line were delayed and the train services resumed after a few hours. Railway Department sources said the estimated damage to the locomotive and the rail track is over three million rupees.
