US President Donald Trump has claimed that Google CEO Sundar Pichai rejected his suggestion to rename the Atlantic Ocean the “Trump Ocean”, arguing that oceans span multiple countries and cannot be renamed in the same way as other geographical locations.
Speaking at an event in South Carolina, Trump recalled an alleged conversation with Pichai in which he proposed changing the name of the Atlantic Ocean on Google Maps.
“I said, Sundar, I’m thinking of the Atlantic Ocean. Can you handle it?” Trump said, according to media reports.
According to Trump, Pichai responded, “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it.”
Trump claimed the Google CEO explained that oceans cover several countries, making such a change impractical.
“He said, ‘Oceans are different, sir. They cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that,’” Trump said.
The president subsequently suggested he would abandon the idea, asking his audience whether the Atlantic Ocean should retain its existing name.
The remarks follow Trump’s previous efforts to rename geographical landmarks, including the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and Lake Ontario as “Lake America” for US government use.
Google Maps has adopted those names for users in the United States, while applying different naming conventions in other countries.
Trump had earlier floated the possibility of renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean the “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas”. (Newswire)
