A passenger who came to the airport to board a flight to Turkey with a firearm and ammunition in his luggage was arrested by the Katunayake Airport security officers in the early hours of yesterday (7).
He is a 59-year-old resident of the Minuwangoda area and arrived at Katunayake Airport at around 5.30 am on yesterday (7).The firearm and bullets were found by the airport security officers during the scanning of the luggage. He had arrived at the Katunayake Airport early that morning to board Turkish Airlines flight leaving at 8.15 to go to Istanbul, Turkey. It is strictly forbidden to carry firearms or similar shaped items by air and if it is necessary to carry them for special needs, permission of the Sri Lanka Civil Aviation Authority should be obtained.
Steps have been taken to refer the firearm seized by Police to the Colombo Police Field Force Headquarters for further investigation.
The person who tried to carry this firearm illegally was to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court. Katunayake Airport Police are conducting further investigations.
