Turtle deaths due to sea explosions – Wildlife Dept
The Wildlife Conservation Department says that the turtles washed ashore along the west coast since August 22 died due to an explosion in the sea. Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the Bellanwila Veterinarian to immediately file a report to the Court regarding the cause of death of 25 turtles, a protected species.
The Wildlife Conservation Department said that the reason for the death of the turtles piled up on the west coast has been revealed in the post-mortem examinations of the turtle carcasses and a report has been submitted to Court in this regard.
It has been mentioned in the report that the explosions may have occurred in the ocean due to the use of explosives for prohibited fishing methods and the outer shell of three turtles was severely damaged. Treatment of those surviving animals has already started.
