Two apprehended for engaging in light-coarse fishing
The Navy apprehended two persons for engaging in light-coarse fishing, during a special operation conducted in Chundikulam sea area, Jaffna on Sunday.
The operation also led to the seizure of two dinghies and unauthorized fishing equipment used for the illegal act.
The Navy carries out regular operations in the coastal and sea areas around the island, with a view to prevent illegal fishing practices which threaten the sustainability of fish populations.
As an extension of these efforts, the Naval Detachment at Chundikulam belonging to the Naval Deployment Veththalakerni in the Northern Naval Command made this apprehension, during a search operation conducted off Chundikulam. The operation resulted in the arrest of two persons, seizure of two dinghies and fishing gear for engaging in light-coarse fishing.
The suspects held in this operation are residents of the Pudukuduirippu area, aged 21 and 26.
The two suspects along with their belongings were handed over to the Fisheries Inspector in Jaffna for further legal proceedings.
