Two Army personnel have been taken into custody by Wildlife Officials for transporting venison in an ambulance on Poya Day.
The arrests were made when an ambulance which was travelling from Henanigala South along the main canal bund road towards Mawanagama at about 10 a.m. on Poya Day (November 7) was stopped and inspected near the wildlife park entrance by officials of the Henanigala Wildlife Office.
This raid had been carried out by Wildlife Site Security Officer K. H. M. Jayawardena and a team of officials from the Henanigala Wildlife office.
Jayasoma Ratnayake who is in charge of the Maduruoya National Wildlife Park said that based on a tip-off received by officials of the Henanigala Wildlife office, they had halted the ambulance and inspected it.
The two suspects taken into custody were a Corporal and a Lance Corporal serving at an Army camp in Mawathagama and it had been identified that the ambulance also belonged to that Army camp.
