Two cricketers from Nugawela Central in Women’s Development squad
Two talented Girls’ Cricketers of Nugawela Central School namely Sansala Wanigasekera and Tharushi Rajakaruna have been selected to the Under 21 Womens’ Development Squad of Sri Lanka Cricket for the first time from a rural school and these two Women Cricketers will undergo a Three months Training course under the coaches of Sri Lanka Cricket.
Sansala Wanigasekera, an A/L student of the school is the present Cricket Captain of the School team and she started her cricket career at the age of Ten years in the year 2012 under the coaching of Lalith Chandrasena, a former Cricketer of St.Andrews’ College,Gampola and a Senior cricket coach and Umpire. in 2015 she scored a match winning Seventy Eight runs against Pindeniya Central School . In the following year she performed well as a wicket keeper claiming twenty five victims behind the Stumps and in 2017 she was selected to the Provincial Cricket team under the Captaincy of Shini Senaratne at the Kandy District Womens’ Cricket tournament held among the Kandy, Dambulla and Galle Cricket teams and at this cricket match Sansala took Ten catches and five stumpings as a wicket keeper. In the year 2019 she claimed three catches behind the stumps and scored an unbeaten knock of fifty runs representing Mahamaya Cricket Club playing against Palinks Cricket School,Colombo.
This year too she led her School Cricket team and scored thirty runs in the first match of the season against St.Anthonys’Girls School,Katugastota and she was selected to the Provincial Cricket team as a wicket keeper/batswoman.
Tharushi Rajakaruna, an A/L student of Nugawela Central School started her
Cricket career at the age of twelve years and her Cricket coaches were S. Jaliya and Krishantha Gunawardena. She is a right hand batswoman and a right arm off- spinner and she was selected to the School Cricket team in the year 2015 and the School Cricket team came up-to Quarter finals at the All Island Schools tournament in 2015/16 and her best bowling feat was claiming a match bag of Ten wickets for forty runs in the year 2016 but she showed vast improvement when she went for training under Amila Pinnaduwa, the Provincial Cricket Coach and Ananda Bandaranayake, the District Cricket coach, and they detected her talent and Tharushi was included in the Development Squad in 2018. Immediately she showed her talent as an off-spinner when she bagged four wickets for twenty one at the Inter Provincial Cricket Tournament against Dambulla Cricket Club team representing Kandy District side.
As a player in the Kandy District Womens’ Cricket team she notched up her first century in 2020 when she scored 101 runs against Nuwara Eliya district at the Inter District Womens’ Cricket tournament Cricket Associatio. In the year 2021 at the All island Girls’ Schools Cricket tournament she bagged Three wickets for thirteen runs against St.Anthonys’ Girls School.
