Two employees questioned

The Police have recorded statements from two staff employees and a driver in connection with the suicide of a wealthy businessman in Digana named Mangala Gunawardena.

The businessman shot himself dead at his office in a three storied building in Digana at around 12.15 p.m. on Wednesday using his own weapon. He succumbed to his injuries upon admission to the Kandy National Hospital. 

The reason for his suicide has not been revealed yet. He had been lending money and doing business using the money he earned as interest.

He had used his weapon on several occasions before this incident. During the final match of the Asian Cricket World Cup, he, under the influence of liquor, had shot at the TV at a restaurant in Digana.

The deceased businessman was dubbed “Poli Mangala”. It was revealed that he had had an affair with an employee of his company.

The Police are yet ascertain whether the suicide was related to the affair.

The deceased had maintained close connections with police officers in the area, politicians and businessmen.
