According to Pannala Police, a female student studying at Makandura Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition Faculty affiliated to the Wayamba University has died after being hospitalized with a stomach ailment. Pannala Police said that she was admitted to Sandalankawa Hospital on October 11 and was transferred to the Colombo National Hospital for further treatment where she died on October 13.
She was 23 years old and a resident of Dharmapala Road, Ampara.
A senior officer of the Pannala Police said that the Police has not yet received the post-mortem report and the cause of death will be known once it is received.
Police said that following her death, the students of that Faculty and the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management of the university have been closed and students have been sent home until next Monday.
Police also said that lectures are being conducted online.
