Two held for using WP Health Dept. jeeps

The Colombo Crime Division said that two persons were arrested for using two jeeps belonging to the Western Province (WP) Health Services Department for about 15 years, by using fake registration numbers in their names. Police said that a management official of the Western Province Health Services Department had complained to the Maligawatte Police that two jeeps were being used by outsiders with the same registration numbers – Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep 32-4376 and the Mitsubishi Pajero 32-5286.

The Police stated that after a lengthy investigation, the two suspects were identified, called to Unit 5 and arrested after taking their statements.

During the questioning of the suspects, it was revealed that both their jeeps were also registered in the Department of Motor Traffic. As it is not possible to register several vehicles with the same number, they will further investigate whether the assistance of some officials of the Department of Motor Traffic has been received for this purpose.

The two arrested suspects are residents of Biyanwila in Kadawatha and Tirappane in Anuradhapura. The suspects are to be produced before the Court. Police investigations are ongoing.
