Two Kandakadu groups clash again, 47 escape
According to the Welikanda Police, subsequent to a clash between newly admitted detainees to the camp and detainees who had been there for some time, which took place day before yesterday at about 11 pm at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Camp about 47 detainees had escaped from the camp and 22 of them had been taken into custody by Police.
During a dispute between two groups that broke out at this rehabilitation camp which houses about 408 detainees, about 90 of them had fled from the camp. However, a group of them had returned and surrendered to authorities. Welikanda Assistant Superintendent Pragathi Abeysinghe said that there remain 25 more detainees at large to be taken into custody.
A team of officers from the Pulasthigama Police had taken into custody 22 of the detainees who had escaped from the camp and were in hiding, near the Sungavila Bridge.
The Welikanda Police said that two of the detainees are receiving treatment at the Welikanda Hospital but that they are not detainees who had been injured in the clash.
Twenty-two detainees were taken into custody early morning yesterday, by a team of Police officers including Pulasthigama Police OIC Chief Inspector Dhammika Dias on the instructions of SSP Polonnaruwa Nishantha De Silva. The detainees who were arrested were scheduled to be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon.
