Two new meet records on opening day of NSG
Nesarasa Daksitha of Northern Province and A.G.V.V. Lakmali established new meet records in the Women’s Pole Vault and Discus throw events, respectively, on the opening day of the 47th National Sports Games (NSG) held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.
Nesarasa Daksitha set a new distance of 3.50m erasing the previous record of 3.48m.
U.T. Wickramasekara of Western Province won second place with a jump of 3.20m while K.A.C.K Kodituwakku was placed third clearing 3.00m.
Lakmali set up a new meet record in the women’s discus with a throw of 44.59m while Ishara Madurangi of Western Province (42.72m) and Chanuka Atapatthu of Western (37.33m) were placed second and third.
H.M.W.G.W.M. Herath of Central Province won the women’s 10,000m race clocking a winning time of 36 minutes and 10.18 seconds while A.N.L. Airiyadasa of Sabaragamuwa Province won second place (36.33.07sec) and Nimesha Nidharshani of Uva Province won third place with 37 minutes 59.6 seconds.
Hemantha Kumara of Western Province clocked 14 minutes, 38.8 seconds to bag the gold medal in the men’s 5,000m while D.M D.S. Dissanayake of North Central Province and Tharindu Dhanushka of Uva Province finished second and third, respectively. The Men’s Javelin Throw event was won by Sumeda Ranasinghe of Sabaragamuwa Province with a distance of 77.23m while Rumesh Tharanga of Western Province (76.45m) and D.S Ranasinghe of Southern Province (71.80m) were placed second and third.
Meanwhile, Southern Province’s 100mx4 women’s relay team won first place by 48.54 seconds while North Western Province and Sabaragamuwa Province were placed second and third. The Southern Province men’s 100×4 relay team also excelled with a time of 41.4 seconds to clinch the title while North Western Province and Uva Province finished second and third.
The opening ceremony of the National Sports Games was held yesterday evening as Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena was the Chief Guest while Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe, State Minister of Sports Rohan Dissanayake, Sports Ministry Secretary K. Maheeshan and Sports Director General Dr. Shemal Fernando also graced the occasion.
The Prime Minister said that athletes and coaches made their best effort to achieve great results. The recent success of the Lankan athletes winning several medals at International level is a big achievement for sports.
E.M.L. Priyankara who excelled in Wrestling and Judo at National and International level and Shivanthi Jayatilleka who won laurels in the sprint double of 100m and 200m at the National Sports Games had the honour of lighting the ‘Games Flame’.
