Two Pera, J’pura Engineering undergrads commit suicide

Two undergraduates of the Sri Jayawardhanapura and Peradeniya University Engineering Faculties had committed suicide yesterday. The deceased are residents of Kayts and Karambai in the Jaffna district.

Police said a first-year student of the Peradeniya University Engineering Faculty had committed suicide in the bathroom adjacent to a room on the third floor of the Akbar Hostel of the university, early morning yesterday (16).The deceased is Nagunarasa Gugatheesan (22). He was a resident of Karambai, West Jaffna. Last year, four students of the Peradeniya University committed suicide and three of them were from the Engineering Faculty.

With the death of this student, the number of suicides of students for 2023-2024 at this university has increased to five while four of them were from the Engineering Faculty.

The examination of the first-year students of the Engineering Faculty had ended yesterday (16) and this particular student Gugatheesan who had been studying had gone to the bathroom at about 1.30 am and hung himself, committing suicide, according to Peradeniya University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof.Terrence Madujith. This student’s mother had died of cancer sometime back and his brother had come to the university yesterday (16) to take over the body.

Police said that the deceased student had been in his room at the hostel together with three other students, at the time. They have obtained statements from these students as well. Subsequent to the Magistrate’s examination, the body had been handed over to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital for a post-mortem to be conducted. Further investigations are being carried out under the directions of Officer-In-Charge of the Peradeniya Police Chief Inspector Vijith Wijekone.

Meanwhile a third-year student of the Engineering Faculty of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University had committed suicide by hanging himself inside the hostel yesterday (16), the Maharagama Police said.

The deceased Wigneswaran Abinejan (23) was a resident of Narathanai North, Kayts, Jaffna.He had committed suicide inside the student hostel which had been obtained at rent at Katuwawala, Boralesgamuwa near the university, using a rope.Another student who had woken up at about 4.30 and come down had seen him dead.

Later the police had been informed and they had arrived and begun investigations. Maharagama Coroner, Justice of the Peace H.M.Douglas Rupasiri had come and carried out an examination onsite.

Since the rope used by the student to commit suicide had been brought from outside and it was not possible to confirm how it had been brought into the hostel, as well as the suspicion based on

the deceased student’s missing mobile phone, the coroner had ordered the police to carry out the other activities required through a magistrate.

Accordingly, Nugegoda Crime Scene Unit officers had arrived and launched investigations and a magistrate’s inquiry was also scheduled to be held.

The post-mortem on the deceased student is due to be held at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital. The reason for the death has not yet been discovered and further investigations are being conducted on the instructions of Maharagama Police OIC Chief Inspector Chelaka Rajapakse.
