The Navy apprehended two suspects with about 1,000 foreign cigarettes during a special search operation carried out in Thavulpadu area in Mannar on Tuesday.
The Sri Lanka Navy conducts regular search operations to prevent various forms of smuggling activities being carried out in the coastal regions of the island. SLNS Gajaba in the North Central Naval Command made this apprehension on receipt of information. Thus, naval personnel engaged in this special operation searched a retail shop in the Thavulpadu area on February 21 and nabbed two suspects with about 1,000 foreign cigarettes.
The suspects arrested during the operation were identified as residents of the Kurunegala and Mannar areas, aged 23 and 63.
The two suspects along with illegal foreign cigarettes were handed over to the Mannar Police for further legal action.
