Two women remanded for assaulting lawyer

Attanagalla Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne yesterday (1) ordered that two suspects who allegedly kicked and injured a lawyer near the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court to be remanded till November 15.

The Nittambuwa Police conducted investigations and arrested the two suspects, Arachchige Niranjala Sarojani and Vidanagamage Dilki Lakshika who were remanded in relation to an incident in which Sujeewa Hathurusinghe, a lawyer, was allegedly kicked and hit and injured near the lawyers’ office complex located in the vicinity of the entrance to the Attanagalle Court complex day before yesterday (31) afternoon.

Nittambuwa Police Case Operations Division OIC Chief Inspector G.W.L.Ravindra, submitting facts said that it has been revealed during investigations that the two suspects had kicked and hit attorney Sujeewa Hathurusinghe. The Chief Inspector said that the injured lawyer is currently undergoing treatment at theWathupitiwala Base Hospital.

During an inquiry made by the Magistrate, the suspect named Niranjala Sarojani stated that they had both came from Tissamaharama and that out of the six thousand rupees they had, they had given five thousand rupees to obtain bail for a suspect, but as they were unable to do so, they had asked that the money be returned and then an argument had broken out. She claimed that no attack was carried out.

The suspect also said that she demanded the money back because she did not have enough money to go back home.
