Two years’ suspended sentence for online abuse
An accused who pleaded guilty to attempting to engage a minor girl for obscene acts through the internet by uploading her photos and sending another girl obscene content was yesterday sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment. The sentence was suspended for five years by the Colombo High Court. Following serving indictment
to the accused before Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja, the accused admitted and pleaded guilty to the allegations filed against him.
Following his plea to the charges, the Colombo High Court Judge sentenced him to two years’ rigorous imprisonment for the second charge and suspended it for five years. Furthermore, he was ordered to pay fines of Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 25,000 for the charges respectively.
The order was read out to the accused in open court by Mudliyar Sulaiman Yazeer.
The Attorney General had filed an indictment under two counts in the Colombo High Court against the accused on February 23, 2022, for allegedly attempting to engage a minor girl for obscene activities through the internet by uploading her photos and sending obscene content to another girl between the period of July 02, 2014 and July 11, 2014.
The indictment had been filed against the accused under the Obscene Publications Ordinance and the Penal Code.
