UAE Juniors stun fancied Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Under 19 cricket team had to face a shock defeat against UAE as the latter beat Sri Lanka by 2 wickets with 10 balls to spare in their under 19 Asia Cup cricket fixture played at Dubai yesterday.

UAE wicket keeper Tanis Suri was the match winner making fighting knock of 75 in 88 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes guided to chase 221-run target. Skipper Aayan Khan hit 30 in 50 balls with 2 fours made useful knock to reach the target.

In fact number three batter Tanis Suri the 18 year old right hander played a superb innings under pressure to create this upset victory and this was the first time UAE beat Sri Lanka in Asia Cup history.

Sri Lanka invited to bat first made 220 for 9 wickets in 50 overs. Skipper Sineth Jayawardena scored 49 in 65 balls with 3 fours and 2 sixes while all rounder Dinura Kalupahana made a solid knock of unbeaten 56 in 87 balls with only 2 boundaries.

Kalupahana was unable to play his normal game and he had to play a very responsible innings as Sri Lanka were struggling at 122 for 5 in 28 overs. The openers Pulindu Perera 24 in 34 balls with 3 fours and Hirun Kapurubandara scored only 1 in 10 balls couldn’t able to give good start.

Skipper Sineth Jayawardena and Rusanda Gamage 26 in 39 balls with 2 fours added 53 runs third wicket stand and later Dinura Kalupahana and Vishwa Lahiru who scored 26 in 30 balls with a boundary were able to pass the 200 run mark. Omid Rehman and skipper Aayan Khan took 2 wickets each for UAE side.

UAE in their run chase, Tanish Suri steered them to get this victory. The right arm medium paceman Garuka Sanketh was the only successful bowler taking 3 for 35 in his ten overs spell but experienced leg spinner Malsha Tharupathi took only one wicket given away 52 runs in his 9 over spell and Sri Lanka bowlers were under pressure during UAE innings.

Sri Lanka started with first match win over Japan and lost to UAE and their deciding game against Bangladesh will play tomorrow (13) and it’ll be a must win game for Sri Lanka to enter the semi finals.

Bangladesh already won their both matches are on top of the group while Sri Lanka having one win at second place with 2 points followed by UAE also 2 points with one win. But Sri Lanka maintained a better run rate of 1.708 and UAE having -0.504.

Bangladesh beat Japan by 9 wickets yesterday while two matches are on the cards today where Afghanistan taking on Pakistan and India will meet Nepal. Sri Lanka team having a rest day today.
