Udeshika Athlete, Netball player and Cricketer par excellence

Twenty two year old, Udeshika Madhumali, an old girl of Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy is an Athlete, Netball player, Cricketer and Karateka and she was a Student of Mahamaya from the year 2005 to 2019 and solidly built Madhumali started her career as a Karateka in 2008 when she was a student of the Grade four class and her Coach was Aruna de Zoysa.

After a few years of training she became a Brown Belt in Karate and continued the game till she received the Black Belt in Karate. As an Athlete she excelled in Shot Putt and Discuss Throw and became first for a number of years at School level. In School Madhushika was a talented Netball player who trained Netball under Ms. Thisera and Pradeepa and played as the Goal Keeper and her team mates were Pubudu Marasinghe, Ruvinya Malporu and Thiroshi Pathirana to name a few. She played Netball in School from the year 2008 to 2015 and during this period Mahamaya became Central Province Runners-up on many occasions and while doing all these sports she joined the Cricket team of the School under the coaching of the writer with the assistance of E.M.U.Chandrathilak,a talented Cricket coach in the year 2016.

Madhumali was a batswoman as well as a right arm medium pace bowler and she helped the School cricket team to become Champions in many Cricket tournaments against many schools. She participated at the Kandy District Cricket tournaments from the year 2017 to 2019 organised by the Dept. of Education(CP) as an attacking batswoman and scored two half centuries at the Cricket tournament held in 2017 by the Sri Lanka Womens’ Cricket Association.

As a Bowler Udeshika showed her class by claiming three wickets for Twenty runs against Gothami Balika, and continued her fine form in two more Cricket matches by claiming Three Wickets for thirty runs against St. Anthonys’ Girls School and four wickets against Wattegama Maha Vidyalaya in 2018. She was appointed the Captain of the Mahamaya Cricket team in the same year and she led the team successfully in many tournaments.

Although she left School in 2019 she continued her ability in all her sports disciplines and to improve her cricket career she joined the Cricket & Athletic Academy of Kandy District and she is still a versatile player in all these sports.
