UN Resident Coordinator, Labour Minister discuss Migrant Worker Initiatives and Policy Plans
UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) Marc-Andr‚ Franche met with the Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment, Manusha Nanayakkara, yesterday (30), at the Ministry.
During the meeting, Minister Nanayakkara and UNRC Franche discussed measures taken by the Government to provide facilities for migrant workers. The Minister also explained to the UNRC the Government’s plans to digitize the entire Foreign Employment service center in an effort to combat human trafficking.
The Minister also briefed the UNRC about the recently launched National Policy and Action Plan on Migration for Employment (2023-2027), which received support from the International Labour Organization.
The Minister also informed UNRC Franche about the new Labor Bill and explained its new benefits. The Minister pointed out that the Ministry conducts regular reviews of the progress in the key result areas set by the Ministry, which will help achieve the Government’s goals.
During the meeting, the Minister also noted that the Garu Sar initiative introduced by the Ministry of Labour and Foreign Employment, with the aim of providing better working conditions for employees in the informal sector, will be launched on November 1, with the support of the International Labour Organization.
