St Peter’s College secured a remarkable double victory as they emerged victorious in the President’s Trophy for Dialog Schools Rugby Knockout Championship final, defeating Isipathana College with a scoreline of 25-16 at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

In a thrilling contest, St Peter’s College, the reigning League Champions, dominated the match, scoring three tries, two conversions, and two penalties. Isipathana College, their formidable opponents, put up a valiant effort with two unconverted tries and two penalties of their own.

The Peterites held a commanding 19-8 lead at halftime, with Inside Centre Sudesh Jayawickrama earning the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance, which included a crucial try.

The opening moments of the game saw St Peter’s take control, with Sudesh Jayawickrama crossing the line following an infringement in the ruck by Isipathana, Yumeth Shihara converting for a 7-0 lead.

Isipathana managed to reduce the deficit to 3-7 with a penalty from Rinesh Silva in the 16th minute.

St Peter’s continued to dominate, extending their lead to 14-3 after Dulaj Navodya’s try and Shihara’s conversion in the 18th minute. In the 22nd minute, Peterite Right Wing Pasindu Thakshila added to their lead with an unconverted try, making it 19-3 in favor of St Peter’s.

Isipathana managed to close the gap with an unconverted try from their captain, fly-half Naveen Kanishka, just before halftime, making it 19-8.

After halftime, Rinesh Silva added another penalty for Isipathana, bringing the score to 19-11. St Peter’s responded with a penalty by Yumeth Shihara from a difficult angle, extending their lead to 22-11 in the 41st minute.

Isipathana continued to fight back, scoring an unconverted try from a rolling maul, narrowing the score to 22-16. However, St Peter’s sealed their victory with a 40th-minute penalty from Yumeth Shihara, securing a final score of 25-16.

Referee Raveen Alexander brought the contest to a close as St Peter’s College celebrated their well-deserved victory, completing an undefeated season and clinching the prestigious rugby double championship.
