Under 19 Asia Cup gives vital exposure for our team, says Mubarak
Asia Cup Under 19 cricket tournament which will be held from December 8 to 17 in Dubai gives vital exposure for Sri Lanka under 19 team and we are confident to take up this challenge, said Sri Lanka under 19 head coach Jehan Mubarak in an exclusive interview with Daily News yesterday.
After the successful Pakistan under 19 tour our players continued their preparation to focus on the next under 19 World Cup which is now shifted to South Africa in January/February. However our team led by Sineth Jayawardena is having good
team spirit ready to play the Asia Cup in Dubai said former Sri Lankan player Jehan Mubarak who was a member of the National under 19 team in 2000.
We got a chance to play against West Indies against Pakistan and an under 19 quadrangular tournament in Abu dhabi with Bangladesh, Afghanistan and UAE and all these match series gave much needed exposure for Sri Lanka under 19 cricketers. Without changing our team we used to give this match experience with more than 20 International matches and that is an advantage, said head coach Mubarak. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) gave all infrastructure facilities for under 19 players and I must thank the Junior selection committee headed by Ranjith Madurusinghe who gave excellent support to pick the best team for us. My supporting staff members Assistant coach Sampath Perera, fast bowling coach Chamila Gamage, spin coach Sachith Pathirana, Fielding coach Gayan Wijekoon, Physiotherapist Ajantha Watthegama and Trainer Buddhika Herath are backing this young side and players all are determined to come up with our support while team Manager Jayantha Seneviratne guides us added Mubarak.
Asia cup comprises eight teams and we are in same group with Japan, UAE and Bangladesh while other group has India the defending champion, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nepal. Our first task is to get two victories to enter the semi finals but we want to take match by match. My players have confidence after winning the ODI series against Pakistan in Pakistan. That was very tough tour but our players fought back strongly to win the series and skipper Sineth Jayawardena gave good leadership throughout the series. We have to play the Asia Cup in Dubai Academy ground 1 and 2 while final will be held at Dubai Main Cricket Stadium on December 17. Every match give good exposure for the players and we have good all round side with batting, bowling (both spin and fast bowling) and fielding are of a high standard . We have top order batting including inform opener Pulindu Perera while all rounder Dinura Kalupahana, spin all rounder Malsha Tharupathi are experienced players while Duvindu Ranatunga who did not play West Indies and Pakistan series due to injury once again back to the side. Garuka Sanketh the left arm paceman also in good form while all our players are fit said Jehan. Two reserve players Janith Fernando and Supun Waduge will go on this tour as travel reserves and if any player gets injured they will replace them, added Jehan. We never underestimate any team says skipper Sineth. Meanwhile Sri Lanka under 19 skipper Sineth Jayawardena said he is very confident to play this Asia Cup and want to produce best performance before the World Cup. We never underestimate any opponent and go to make plans match by match. We used to see Videos to get knowledge about opponent teams and my supporting staff gave good encouragement to us said Sineth who is also the Royal College skipper. We have to play first match against Japan on December 9 followed by December 11 against UAE and last league round match against Bangladesh on December 13.
We are having good team spirit and that is good strength while inclusion of new spin coach Sachith Pathirana and other coaches good. As a skipper I haven’t any pressure while apart from my batting I always focus on my bowling and hope to win the Asia Cup and that’ll give more exposure for the next World Cup, said Sineth.
