Undergrad’s murder: Boyfriend remanded till January 30

A Colombo University student, who was arrested over the murder of another university girl

at the Race Course Ground in Colombo 7, was ordered to be remanded till January 30 after being produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Prasanna Alwis.

The Cinnamon Garden Police stated that the suspect was produced before the Judicial Medical Officer yesterday morning.

The Magistrate ordered the Prison Authority to obtain a report pertaining to the mental health of the suspect from the National Institute of Mental Health.

Attorney Upul Ranasinghe appearing on behalf of the suspect informed the Magistrate that his client suffered from a mental issue even before 2018 and was receiving treatment for it.

The 24-year-old suspect was apprehended in the Wellampitiya area. Police further noted that a knife believed to have been used in the murder and a bag were also found in his possession.

The Cinnamon Garden Police stated that they are conducting further investigations.
