UNIDO support to promote Lankan spice brands in international market

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) informed the Agriculture and Plantation Industry Ministry to provide all necessary support to popularise Sri Lanka’s existing brands of spices such as cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, and nutmeg in the international market on recently.

A discussion was held with Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera as the chair. Melvin Spreij, Jairo Andres Villamil Diaz (International Senior Specialist) of UNIDO, Juan Pablo Diaz-Castillo (Industrial Development Officer) and a group of officers participated.

Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said that there is a huge demand for Sri Lanka’s spices in international market, and that the Government has taken all measures to preserve the quality of spices in our country.

He also mentioned that a programme has been started to impart good agricultural practices to farmers and that many training programmes have been started for this purpose this year.

The UNIDO delegation said that the high demand in the world for Sri Lankan cinnamon and pepper is excellent. The officials also said that UNIDO, as the industrial development organisation associated with the United Nations, will provide all support for the further maintenance of that situation as well as the expansion of Sri Lankan spice brands in the international community.
