We have a proper plan from long ago while coaches and athletes have good commitment and their dedication is very high.
We have already produced National and International level athletes like D.A. Inoka, Dilshi Kumarasinghe and the latest addition is young Tharushi Karunaratne who is the main medal hope of the Asian Games. She excelled at the Sir John Tarbat Senior Athletics Championships, which turned out to be her last competition ahead of the Asian Games starting next Saturday. Tharushi Karunaratne who is doing 800m as her key event and 400m, 4x400m women’s relay and 400m mixed relay did only 400m and 400m girls’ relay at this meet and she set up a new meet record as well as National Junior record at 400 m also set up meet record of 400m relay and finally Tharushi was adjudged girls best athlete at this meet.
Tharushi will be aiming for an Asian Games medal in the women’s 800 metres and will play key roles in both the 4×400 metres mixed relay and women’s 4×400 metres said Susantha Fernando who is the man behind the success of Walala athletes. Swarna Palitha another coach of Walala Central with a few other coaches in the physical education section. We haven’t good ground to train our athletes but lack of facilities is not an obstacle to our athletes.
Susantha Fernando who is the Zonal Sports Director of Walala, Digana Education zone always very helpful to athletes like Tharushi. Tharushi Karunaratne always gets her training at Digana public grounds under the guidance of Susantha Fernando. Tharushi and Gayanthika Abeyratne the experienced athlete are in the same 800 m event in Asian Games but this is not an easy meet. Two Sri Lanka athletes Tharushi and Gayanthika are in the Asian ranking top two athletes but we have to face a big challenge at the games said coach Susantha.
Walala Central and Lyceum International Wattala won girls’ and boys’ overall Championship and more athletes have shown their talents said coach Susantha Fernando who also goes to the Asian Games next September 26.
