UNP lifts ban on Harin, Manusha
President chairs UNP Working Committee:
76th Party Convention on September 10:
The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee which met yesterday (02) approved the reinstatement of UNP Working Committee membership to Ministers Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara.
The board had taken steps in 2020 to terminate their Working Committee memberships. The Working Committee meeting was held yesterday at the Sirikotha party headquarters under the chairmanship of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The Working Committee which met on May 29 of 2020 had decided to suspend the party membership and the working committee membership of a group of United National Party MPs including Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara Due to submission of nominations by Samagi Jana Balavega for the election.
The two Ministers reunited with President Ranil Wickremesinghe by taking the positions of Cabinet Ministers in May last year and rejoined the Party. The two of them also participated in the WC meeting after they were re-membered yesterday. The Working Committee also decided to hold the UNP’s 76th anniversary and Party Convention at the Nelum Pokuna Theater in Colombo on September 10.
It was also discussed to have United National Party members from all over the country participate for this purpose. It was also decided to get approval for preparing a new constitution for the party at this conference.
Party General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara mentioned that in addition to the Working Committee, strengthening the Working Council, making the Working council a decision-making place, creating a separate committee for carrying out political activities, and organizing the party in line with the online system were also discussed. The President expressed his gratitude to those who re-powered the 135 Bala Mandala of UNP.
The working committee also discussed the amendment of the party constitution and it was decided toappoint an Working Committee and give more powers to that committee.
It was also decided to get the support of the representatives of the party’s youth and women’s societies for the said committee.
