UNP to ride ‘Elephant’ again for coming polls
The United National Party decided to contest all upcoming elections under the ‘Elephant’ symbol, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said.
He said a special discussion on the future political path of the UNP was held under the leadership of the party leader, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday.
He said the discussion focused on the party’s strategy for the upcoming elections, with an emphasis on contesting under the ‘Elephant’ symbol.
Commenting on the NPP’s victory in the North, Abeywardena said the Tamil people in the North trusting a political party from the south augurs well for the country’s future.
The UNP Chairman said, the biggest challenge before the new government was to resurrect the country’s ailing economy.
He said, UNP Leader Wickremesinghe had taken over at a time when the country was in an economic abyss and in a short period of more than two years he had put the economy back on track and added the new government should build on the gains and fully recover the economy.
